218lb tuna!, what a week to be fishing in La Paz.

What a week to be fishing in La Paz. If you were lucky enough to be on the water with a fishing pole in hand then you most likely got a chance to pull on a big tuna. The 88 spot out of Punta Arena was the place to be. Large tuna ranging from 40 to well over 200 pounds could be seen boiling and even jumping out of the water like dolphin. They were feeding on small squid deep below but could be tempted to the surface with either sardines, zebras, caballitos or small dorado. Not only were their tuna but also dorado ranging from 20-45lbs hanging out at the buoys. Pangeros were either drift fishing or slow trolling bait. With the 88 spot being so great it was hard to go anywhere else but, the North end of Cerralvo Island and Punta Perico also proved successful competition. Many fisherman came back with catches of Snapper, Cabrilla and Dorado. Water temps are low to mid 80's and air temp is mid 90's and heating up. Pictures below include Treme, Chris and Cpt. Rigo with a 218lb tuna, Keith Gilmetti with a 42lb dorado, Neal Konami with a pargo, Pete Teichmann with a 45lb dorado and Phil and Terri Schenck with a 80lb tuna.

This week we had good catches of a mixture of fish.

Fishing report for the week of April 24-May 1. This week we had good catches of a mixture of fish. Snapper were caught at Cerralvo Island using sardinas and cocineros with a lot of hook ups and some catches of the strong dog tooth snapper. The yellowtail and cabrilla are still hanging out at Punta Perico and more dorado are showing up with the increasingly warm water. Weather temps are in the 90's and are warming up the waters bringing more and more fish. At Boca del Alamo good size rooster from 30-50lbs were caught. Pictured is fisherman TOM CCHAPMAN from San Ramon, Ca. Tom fished several days with Captain Rigo and is showing what he caught, plenty of fish filets to take home. Sunday was not a good day to fish, the wind blew turning the water green and made it difficult to chum for pargo and yellowtail. The positive side to the wind is it brings the warm water and fish from the South up towards La Paz making the fishing even better for the days to come.

Another week brings changes in weather.

Another week brings changes in weather. Wind gives way to calm warming waters and 80 degree temperatures. Fishing at Punta Perico provides for catches of yellowtail and red snapper, while the dorado are lured to the buoys at El Alamo. Bait is plentiful and will provide with catches of pargo and yellowtail. As you can see by the picture, our skipper Rigo caught pargo and yellowtail at El Alamo and his friend Guillermo caught dorado up to 30lbs, red snapper and yellowtail. Rigo and Nufo are pictured with one of the yellowtail they caught that day. The fish are here, their hungry and biting and the skippers are consistantly bringing in the fish that are hooked. Why wait, the fish are here now!

Pargo were abundant at Punta Perico

This week transitioned into a great week for fishing out of Muertos Bay in La Paz. Winds died subsiding to flat calm waters and temperatures rose bringing with the change lots of pargo and big yellowtail. Pargo were abundant at Punta Perico, most in the
25-50lb range and if you had lots of sardines you were in the game. At the South end of Cerralvo Island big yellowtail from 30-50lbs made their appearance. Most pangas returned loaded with fish, both yellowtail and pargo each day. Hopefully, this week is a precurser to what the summer will bring.

Tortuga was honored to have hosted Gerry Benedicto

This past weekend, Tortuga was honored to have hosted Gerry Benedicto, the Brand Manager of Seaguar, known for their Fluorocarbon lines and leaders. Mr. Benedicto kindly provide us with some samples of their very best fluorocarbon leader material.

He was taken out to sea 3-days in a row with Captain Rigo. Despite windy conditions and choppy waters, he was able to bring in 5 Yellowtails (between 25-35lbs each), 2 Cabrillas, and 1 Trigger Fish (good for Ceviche!). Almost all the Captains here in La Paz use Seaguar fluorocarbon leaders because of it's amazing knot & tensile strength and it's less visible to the fish underwater. Mr.

Benedicto seemed to have had a blast and we were happy found us.

Michael and Dan from Los Angeles show their fish they caugth ,Red snapers and dorado.

Fish report for the week of January 10th to 13th.  This weeks fishing has produced catches of small yellowtail 6-10lb range, dorado 10-15lbs, pargo 10-15lbs and sierra 3-6 lbs.  Most of the fishing has been close to shore around Punta Perico and Las Arenas because of the afternoon winds.  Bait can be found but has been pretty small.  Local fisherman has seen and caught some tuna and yellowtail in the 15-40lb range at the North end of Cerralvo Island but this week the wind has made it difficult to go that far.

Regardless of the tropical depression that passed close to La Paz in the past days, the fishing has been good. We have been catching Tunas in the 15 to 30 pound range. You can add into the mix Dorado, Wahoo and even Pargos. If you are looking to catch some Marlin and Rooster fish they are in the area as well.

Dean Kitano shows us the different variety of fish that he caught like Wahoo, Tuna and Pargo.

Dos and his friend Moy are very proud to show us all the Dorados they caught with the assistance of our Captain Jorge.

Lately, the weather has been nice and hot with temperature between the mid 90’s. No more wind or rain due to a Storm.

Fishing Report;

To start with, the fishermen that have been visiting us in the last few weeks have caught a large variety of fish like Pargo, Yellowtail, Tuna, Dorado, and Marlin.

All this fishing has been around or near the areas of the southern point of Isla Cerralvo, Punta Perico, and the southern area of Boca Del Alamo. We are using Squid and that has been a very good bait for catching the fish.

Crissy & Peter Teichmann and their group of friends were here fishing for 10 days in these areas and did very well. Hoyt Yee caught some Dorado using Cabrillas as bait and also caught some nice Pargo Also, the young Guscott caught a Yellowtail.

Matthew Lewis and Michael Coxin also caught some big Yellowtails, Dorados, and Tunas.
The weather is still very pleasant and great for fishing. We will be waiting for you as usual to come down and enjoy the fishing.

We have had very good fishing over the past weeks, we have caught a lot of nice Red Snapper, Dog Snapper and Amberjack. All of these bottom fish were caught at the Island and Punta Perico. Most anglers familiar with these areas have been producing good numbers of fish for several weeks. This week Tortuga anglers have been catching good numbers of Dorado and Tuna ranging from 30 to 50 lbs.

Sr. Marty Hettich from Huntington Beach and his group caught good size Red Snapper, Dog Snapper, Amberjack, and Marlin

Rick Golbach hooked a big Amberjack, Ron Harris caught some nice Red Snapper, Bob Waddel with his friend Nufo caught some very nice Dog Snappers We also had a chance to fish with our friends Smithy and Glenn Allen, they have been fishing a lot in Loreto recently but decided to fish with us again. They had a great time catching Snapper with Capt. Rigo and Nufo.

We hope all anglers who missed fishing with us this past month have a chance to visit us this summer. The summer months always provide some big fish to challenge any angler - Wahoo, Tuna, Dorado, Roosterfish and Billfish are here waiting for a good fight!!
